I
started taking photographs of historic rallycars as an enthusiastic
amateur back in 2002. That year i only visited the Ypres Historic Rally
and the Historic Tour of Flanders, but the virus caught me again.
Again, as my passion for rallying goes back to the middle of the
seventies when i was about 5 years old ...
Ik ben als enthousiaste amateur begonnen met plaatjes schieten van
historische rallywagens in 2002. Dat jaar bezocht ik enkel de Ypres
Historic Rally en de Omloop van Vlaanderen Historic, maar het virus had
me terug te pakken. Terug, want mijn passie voor rallysport kreeg
ik in het midden van de jaren '70 toen ik een knaapje van een jaar of 5
was ...
My
dad was the local Fiat-specialised mechanic in Ronse, my town of
birth. The garage and home formed the ideal playground, especially with
the big parking in front. I made the place unsafe for customers while
racing in my kart, wich dad constructed in his free time. I once even
managed to lay the thing on it's side when i got a little to
entousiastic. I also learned steering in our Fiat 124 Special T by
sitting on dad's knies. I also drove imaginary rallies with mom's Fiat
500 when it was parked in the garage. The carburattor was allmost daily
choked with fuel as i could reach for the gas pedal in this little fantastic car...
Mijn vader was toen de onafhankelijke Fiat-specialist in mijn
geboortestad Ronse. De garage en woonst vormden één
geheel met de grote parking welke voor mij de ideale speeltuin was. Ik
maakte de plaats onveilig voor de klanten door er met mijn kart
die vader tijdens zijn vrije tijd in mekaar had geknutseld rond te
sleuren. Ik ben er zelfs één keer in geslaagd het ding op
zijn zijde te leggen. Ik leerde er ook onze Fiat 124 Special T op
papa's schoot te besturen. Ik reed denkbeeldige rallies aan het stuur van mama's Fiat 500 in de garage.
De motor was practisch dagelijks verzopen want ik kon bij het gaspedaal ...
Our gas-station was during The 1975 Tour de Belgique an official
refueling point where the cars came in from the evening to late at
night, and i could stay awake untill i got tired to sleep.
Just like in a fairy-tale ...
Tijdens de Tour de Belgique van 1975 was ons benzine-station een
officiëel refueling punt. De wagens kwamen vanaf 's avonds
tot diep in de nacht langs voor een volle tankbeurt en ik mocht lang
opblijven. Net als in een sprookje ...
Between 1976 and 1978 my uncle participated to rallies with a modified
Fiat 124 Special T wich was upgraded by my father. The original 1400cc
sedan got an 1800cc engine and a five-gearbox from a 124
coupé. My uncle also drove slalom events onboard of my aunt's
daily drive, the at that time old red Mini cooper ...
Tussen 1976 en 1978 nam mijn oom deel aan rallies met een gemodifieerde
Fiat 124 Special T welke volledig door mijn vader werd opgebouwd. De
1400cc sedan werd opgewaardeerd met een 1800cc motor en voorzien van
een vijfbak afkomstig uit een 124 coupé. Mijn oom nam eveneens
deel aan slaloms met het dagelijks vervoermiddel van mijn tante, de
toen reeds oude rode Mini Cooper ...
We
also visited F1 Grand-Prix at that time in Zolder, Francorchamps,
Zandvoort, and Nivelles. But i had only eyes for the small Simca's who
guaranteed the best of shows during the Simca Rallye Cup wich took
place just before the F1 racing monsters refreshed the circuit with a
new layer of rubber. Those were the days ...
We gingen ook regelmatig naar F1 Grand-Prix in Zolder, Francorchamps,
Zandvoort en Nivelles (Nijvel). Ik had echter meer oog voor de kleine
Simcaatjes die zich ten beste gaven in de Simca Rallye Cup net voordat
de F1 bolides het circuit van een nieuwe laag rubber mochten voorzien. De goeie ouwe tijd ...
Back to the Future
